It appears that mobile phone network Vodafone is to be the first official stockist of the eagerly anticipated new Blackberry Torch handset.

The UK mobile operator has become the first company to set up a pre-order page for their customers who are interested in acquiring this latest smart phone handset from Blackberry. Despite the pre-order webpage becoming active, Vodafone has yet to release any details about the price of the handset, or of the tariff structure which it will be available under. It has been rumoured that the new handset could begin shipping to Vodafone customers in as little as two weeks.

The new Blackberry Torch looks set to pick up where previous models have failed to take off; RIM’s previous two touch screen handsets (Storm and Storm 2) failed to ignite the imagination of the general public and were poorly received overall, leading some critics to claim that this is the final attempt to get a touch screen Blackberry right before customers start to become disillusioned with the idea. However, the product’s developers insist that the Blackberry Torch 9800 will bridge the gap between competent professional and exciting touch screen handset; it features both touch screen operation (with pinch to zoom function) and a slide out keyboard. As well as the new hardware aspects, the phone is also going to be utilising a brand new operating system, OS6, which RIM believe will be able to hold its own against rigorous competition from both the Apple iPhone and Google Android markets.
